"Mouse and Buckle": Archaeology in 3D Fairy Tale Format

ANO «Institute of Archaeology of the North» continues the implementation of a project to create an interactive electronic web-book «Mouse and Buckle» — a modern digital product that unites the archaeological heritage of Yugra, children’s literature, and immersive technologies.

The project is implemented with the support of the Governor’s Grant of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug — Yugra within the framework of project No. 25-1-000323 «Yugra Archaeological Tales. ‘Mouse and Buckle’.» The technological partner of the project is Endy LLC.

Currently, the project team is developing an interactive WebGL module, which will become a fully animated electronic book accessible through a browser without the need to install additional applications. The project is based on the archaeological tale «Mouse and Buckle,» inspired by the historical and cultural heritage of the north of Western Siberia, Russia.

The electronic book is being created as a multilingual interactive product and will be available in Russian, English, and Chinese. Users will be able not only to read the story but also to interact with animated illustrations, listen to voiceovers, choose language combinations of text and audio, and use an automatic playback mode.

The project includes the implementation of 40 interactive pages with character and object animations, an adaptive interface for computers and mobile devices, and a voiceover system in three languages. Special attention is paid to the visual component of the project, based on artistic illustrations and stylistics that reflect the atmosphere of Yugra’s archaeological tales.

The technological basis of the project will be a WebGL module based on Unity, allowing the book to operate directly in a browser with support for modern multimedia capabilities. Upon completion of development, the interactive book will be placed on the official resources of the ANO «Institute of Archaeology of the North,» after which the project materials can be presented on partner platforms.

The project aims to popularize the cultural and archaeological heritage of Yugra, develop modern digital formats of children’s content, and create new tools for introducing children and teenagers to the history and traditions of the North through visual storytelling and interactive engagement.
