In Pskov, a trial run of new excursion routes using immersive augmented reality technologies has taken place.
In Pskov, a trial run of a new format for excursion routes was held, utilizing immersive augmented reality technologies that combine the traditional guide’s narrative with augmented reality. The route was developed in collaboration with the Pskov State University (PskSU) College, which trains specialists in the tourism sector.
The format involves small excursion groups of 5-6 people. The guide leads a walking tour along a historical route, narrating key events and details about the city’s landmarks. At specific points, participants put on augmented reality glasses and can see reconstructions of the historical events that were just described.
During the trial run, several scenes from the city’s history were demonstrated: the defense of the walls of the Pskov Kremlin, trade at the city’s merchant rows, and a scene of Prince Vasily’s arrival by boat. An episode depicting the defense of the Pokrovskaya Tower during the siege of Pskov by the troops of Stefan Batory was also shown.
First-year students from the PskSU College and representatives of the educational institution took part in the trial excursion. The participants completed the entire route with the guide, tested the augmented reality glasses, and assessed how the immersive scenarios complement the traditional excursion format.
Following the trial run, the project team gathered feedback from the participants. The recommendations received will be used for further refinement of the route and scenarios. This new format could become a promising tool for the development of urban tourism, allowing the history of Pskov to be literally «brought to life» and making excursions more visual and engaging.
